47.1 Matrix Basics
A matrix is a rectangular array of numbers, symbols, or expressions, arranged in rows and columns. Matrices are fundamental in linear algebra and have wide applications in science, engineering, and economics.
The order (or dimension) of a matrix is defined by the number of its rows and columns. An $m \times n$ matrix has $m$ rows and $n$ columns.
Each entry in a matrix is called an element. An element is denoted by a lowercase letter with two subscripts, e.g., $a_{ij}$ refers to the element in the $i$-th row and $j$-th column.

Types of Matrices:
- Row Matrix: A matrix with only one row. Example: $[1 \quad 2 \quad 3]$
- Column Matrix: A matrix with only one column. Example: $\begin{pmatrix} 4 \\ 5 \\ 6 \end{pmatrix}$
- Square Matrix: A matrix with an equal number of rows and columns ($n \times n$). Example: $\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{pmatrix}$

Matrices can be added, subtracted, and multiplied by scalars or other matrices, provided certain conditions are met.
Addition and Subtraction:
Matrices can be added or subtracted only if they have the same order (same number of rows and columns). The operation is performed element-wise.

The product of two matrices $A$ and $B$, denoted $AB$, is defined only if the number of columns in $A$ is equal to the number of rows in $B$. If $A$ is an $m \times n$ matrix and $B$ is an $n \times p$ matrix, then their product $AB$ will be an $m \times p$ matrix.
Each element $(AB)_{ij}$ is found by taking the dot product of the $i$-th row of $A$ and the $j$-th column of $B$.

The determinant is a special number that can be calculated from a square matrix. It provides important information about the matrix, such as whether it is invertible and whether a system of linear equations has a unique solution.
Determinant of a $2 \times 2$ Matrix:
For a $2 \times 2$ matrix $A = \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}$, the determinant is calculated as:
$$ \text{det}(A) = |A| = ad - bc $$Determinant of a $3 \times 3$ Matrix:
For a $3 \times 3$ matrix $A = \begin{pmatrix} a & b & c \\ d & e & f \\ g & h & i \end{pmatrix}$, the determinant can be calculated using the cofactor expansion method (or Sarrus' Rule for $3 \times 3$ matrices).
$$ \text{det}(A) = a(ei - fh) - b(di - fg) + c(dh - eg) $$A matrix is singular (non-invertible) if its determinant is zero. If the determinant is non-zero, the matrix is non-singular (invertible).
47.4 Inverse Matrix
The inverse of a square matrix $A$, denoted $A^{-1}$, is a matrix such that when it is multiplied by $A$, it yields the identity matrix $I$. That is, $AA^{-1} = A^{-1}A = I$. Not all matrices have an inverse; only non-singular matrices (those with a non-zero determinant) are invertible.
Inverse of a $2 \times 2$ Matrix:
For a $2 \times 2$ matrix $A = \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}$, its inverse is given by the formula:
$$ A^{-1} = \frac{1}{\text{det}(A)} \begin{pmatrix} d & -b \\ -c & a \end{pmatrix} $$where $\text{det}(A) = ad - bc \neq 0$.
For larger matrices (e.g., $3 \times 3$ or higher), finding the inverse involves more complex methods like the Gauss-Jordan elimination method or using the adjugate matrix.
47.5 Solving Linear Systems
Matrices provide a powerful tool for solving systems of linear equations. A system of $n$ linear equations with $n$ variables can be represented in matrix form as $AX = B$, where $A$ is the coefficient matrix, $X$ is the variable matrix, and $B$ is the constant matrix.
For example, the system: $$ \begin{cases} ax + by = p \\ cx + dy = q \end{cases} $$ can be written as: $$ \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} x \\ y \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} p \\ q \end{pmatrix} $$
Methods for solving linear systems using matrices include:
- Matrix Inverse Method: If $A$ is invertible, then $X = A^{-1}B$. This method is straightforward when $A^{-1}$ is known or easily calculated.

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are special numbers and vectors associated with square matrices. They are fundamental in many areas of physics, engineering, and computer science, especially in transformations and system analysis.
For a square matrix $A$, a non-zero vector $v$ is an eigenvector of $A$ if multiplying $A$ by $v$ only scales $v$ by a scalar factor $\lambda$ (lambda). This relationship is expressed as:
$$ Av = \lambda v $$where:
- $A$ is a square matrix.
- $v$ is the eigenvector (a non-zero vector).
- $\lambda$ is the eigenvalue (a scalar, which can be real or complex).
To find eigenvalues, we solve the characteristic equation:
$$ \text{det}(A - \lambda I) = 0 $$where $I$ is the identity matrix of the same dimension as $A$. Once the eigenvalues $\lambda$ are found, the corresponding eigenvectors $v$ can be found by solving the system $(A - \lambda I)v = 0$.
