Understanding Fractions & Conversions

What is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole and is written in the form a/b, where:
a = numerator (top number)   |   b = denominator (bottom number)

Proper Fractions

A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than the denominator. Example: 3/4 means 3 parts out of 4.

Improper Fractions

An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator. Example: 7/5 means more than one whole.

Mixed Numbers

A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction. Example: 2 1/2 means two wholes and one-half.
It can be converted to an improper fraction: 2 1/2 = 5/2.

Converting Fractions to Decimals

To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.
Example: 5/8 = 0.625.

Converting Decimals to Fractions

Write the decimal as a fraction (based on place value) and simplify.
Example: 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4.
